The Everglades Drainage District was established in 1913 (Ch. 6456, 1913 Laws) for the purpose of draining and reclaiming lands located near the Everglades for agricultural and sanitary purposes. The General Assembly of 1850 created the Internal Improvement Board to manage the swamp and overflow lands and the 500,000 acres of public lands transferred to state ownership when Florida entered the Union (Ch. 332, Laws).
